"I am a white woman. I am standing beside a black woman. We are facing a group of white people who are seated in front of us. We are in their workplace, and have been hired by their employer to lead them in a dialogue about race. The room is filled with tension and charged with hostility. I have just presented a definition of racism that includes the acknowledgment that whites hold social and institutional power over people of color. A white man is pounding his fist on the table. His face is red and he is furious. As he pounds he yells, “White people have been discriminated against for 25 years! A white person can’t get a job anymore!” I look around the room and see 40 employed people, all white. There are no people of color in this workplace. Something is happening here, and it isn’t based in the racial reality of the workplace. I am feeling unnerved by this man’s disconnection with that reality, and his lack of sensitivity to the impact this is having on my cofacilitator, the only person of color in the room. Why is this white man so angry? Why is he being so careless about the impact of his anger? Why are all the other
white people either sitting in silent agreement with him or tuning out? We have, after all, only articulated a definition of racism."
- This insulated environment of racial protection builds white expectations for racial comfort while at the same time lowering the ability to tolerate racial stress, leading to what I refer to as White Fragility. White Fragility is a state in which even a minimum amount of racial stress becomes intolerable, triggering a range of defensive moves. These moves include the outward display of emotions such as anger, fear, and guilt, and behaviors such as argumentation, silence, and leaving the stress-inducing situation. These behaviors, in turn, function to reinstate white racial equilibrium.

hi. it’s sohmer (the sohms, sohmie sohms, etc) & im in need of some assistance. the short of it is im trying to move out to california from gainesville, florida with my dog cindy by the end of this summer (july 31st 2015 is my end goal date). im a nb trans person (they/them) & a lesbian & im currently in a pretty stressful and debilitating living situation.
im gonna tell u a lil bit abt my life imo:
im a survivor of csa & incest @ the hands of my padrino from when i was a kid (along w the typical parental neglect, alocholism, all that fun stuff) & as a result im pretty messed up. last christmas (dec 2014), my family said that i lied abt my csa & decided to support my uncle in all the ways they decided not to support me. the entire event finally culminated with my uncle threatening a lawyer on me & also threatening to invade my mother’s house (which is entirely possible, as my mom/sister live in the same neighborhood as him). meanwhile, ive moved in with my dad… except his support in my recovery process is conditional and has left me feeling even more unstable than ive felt in a long, long time.
my therapist agrees w/ me that starting anew in a stable home environment is whats gonna make a difference in my recovery.
ive set the goal amount to $3k for moving expenses + $$ to get me started, but this is subject to change. also, the fund is weird and wouldnt let me put the date 2 the date it actually is. other than my continued traumatising existence im into astronomy, writing, art, being gay, talking 2 friends, doin x files, and hanging out with my dog, who has stopped me from committing suicide more times than i can count.
anyway u can donate here. i am of the onion that u should boost this… if not for my story, then 2 at least bring joy 2 ppl’s dashboards in the form of my pup & my face… thank u

"If there is a country that has committed unspeakable atrocities in the world, it is the United States of America. They don’t care for human beings."
-Nelson Mandela on the US invasion of Iraq
This is the Mandela that I mourn not the white-washed, sanitized version of a revolutionary figure that aligned with Communists, was part of a group branded as terrorists by Reagan, who continued to voice his opposition to Israel’s apartheid regime and illegal occupation of the West Bank and used armed resistance to fight apartheid in South Africa.
The way white people are exalting him across the political spectrum globally based on his national reconciliation work in South Africa post-apartheid (which did have major pitfalls for non-whites in particular) and erasing his revolutionary past and fight for equality across the globe shows just how ignorant of history they are and how incredibly myopic they are too.
White people are doing to Mandela what they’ve already done to Martin Luther King, Jr., and it makes me sick. If I see one more racist white liberal lionizing Mandela in a way that erases his revolutionary past so their facebook status about his death can serve as their “feel-good” justification of the day for their “liberalism,” I’m going to be sick. And don’t even get me started on the white American conservatives who are now lauding him even as Reagan demonized the ANC and Dick Cheney voted against a resolution that would have urged the South African apartheid government to remove Mandela from prison.
Don’t sanitize Mandela for your white comfort. He’s a hero in many regards, but maybe not for the reasons you might think based on the whitewashing he’s receiving in the media to hollow him out and make him into a puppet figure for racist white liberals and conservatives alike, just like MLK.

On numerous occasions, Prince has refused Yankovic permission to record parodies of his songs. Yankovic has stated in interviews that he has “approached him every few years [to] see if he’s lightened up.”[94]Yankovic related one story where, before the American Music Awards where he and Prince were assigned to sit in the same row, he got a telegram from Prince’s lawyers, demanding he not make eye contact with the artist
